Wyndham Wallace's photographs show Arctic Norway's biannual music festival: beautiful caves, marble mines, music and art at Ut Av Vår Hule.

Wyndham Wallace shares his visual perspective from Ut Av Vår Hule (The Out of Our Caves Festival) of music and art in the North of Norway. This year’s festival took place between July 16-18.

1. The Ut Av Vår Hule (Out Of Our Caves) festival – a showcase for up and coming Norwegian musicians and artists – takes place every second year in old marble mines outside Fauske in Northern Norway, just inside the Arctic Circle.

2. The mines were a source of Norwegian Rose dolomite marble, used in the construction of New York’s UN Building and the Japanese Emperor’s Palace.

3. Many of the caves are still accessible, though for the safety of festival goers they are officially closed off due to the water that has flooded many of them. In some, however, old mining gear is still visible, coated in marble dust.

4. Behind the main stage, vast chunks of discarded marble tumble into a striking aquamarine pool, some boulders submerged like blocks of unusually heavy ice.

5. Abandoned buildings, many still containing machinery and tools, are used as venues for other stages and by artists preparing their work, though the message – No Safety Inside – remains clear.

6. Artist Ash Kh’s (AKA Ashraf Khuffash) installation of black doors climbing a marble slurry heap was especially impressive, and not unlike a Pink Floyd album cover.

7. Amidst the marble slurry mountain other participants had installed picnic tables, buckets and spades and other beach accessories whose colours stood out against the blinding white backdrop.

8.Some of those attending were keen to experiment with alternative forms of expression, overseen closely by organisers, naturally.

9. Friday’s opening act, 2x Slagwerk (Two Drummers) performed a challenging but exciting set of experimental rhythm and dub. Like most of the musicians, they are currently unsigned and chosen by organisers wishing to provide a showcase for their work.

10. Artists had created more subtle installations amidst the algae and weeds of the the stream that ran through the festival grounds, Alpine villages and rubber duck ponds amongst them.

11. Musicians Sondre Justad and Marte Røyeng had never performed live together before. They arrived two days early and spent time in the grounds seeking inspiration for their music after other members of Justad’s band, Giraff, were unavailable to appear.

13. Local musician Æ performed an acoustic set inside one of the derelict buildings. He lives on an island some five hours by boat from the nearby city of Bodø.

14.Northern Norwegian drinking rituals often involve good natured physical combat, and Ut Av Vår Hule is no different. This pair are scrambling amidst the dust by the bar, a tent whose legs are levelled on blocks of marble.

15.Fipp, from Bodø, were one of over twenty acts to perform for free over the weekend. Their fierce combination of post-rock and jazz, led by French Horn player Vida Engar, proved especially popular with the small but passionate crowd.

16.Thanks to Northern Norway’s midnight sun, it never gets dark during the festival, though the sun dips down below the horizon for a short hour or two, lighting up the sky different shades of pink and orange every night.

Kate Sedgwick captures rabid Argentina Fans on camera in Buenos Aires for the latest world cup match and begins to wonder if she's becoming one of them.

Before I moved to Buenos Aires, sports didn’t matter to me. Even growing up in Louisville, KY, I was never consumed by March madness and observed with a cynical eye as my mother began following UofL basketball, wondering if pod people had taken her.

I’m starting to get it, though. If I happen to be drowsing through a game, and Argentina scores a goal I can rest assured (or not) my neighbors will wake me up with shouting, air horn blowing and the odd vuvuzela. The sidewalks are littered with confetti following each World Cup match. And I have to admit that I’m getting swept up in it.

So today I went to Plaza San Martín to catch the match between Argentina and Mexico and I’m glad I did. The crowd was great, the game was awesome (Sorry, Mexico fans.) and hours later, horns are still honking in the street. The city’s on a high, and I’m grateful to be here for it all. This has got to be the biggest party I’ve ever been to.

Fiesta de la Candelaria is Peru's most important religious celebration and one of the largest in South America. Elaborate costumes and characters in vivid color as photographed by Tyler Cole might tempt you to go one of these years.

Celebrated every February by Aymara, Quechua, and mestizo ethnic groups of the Peruvian altiplano, the Fiesta de la Candelaria in Puno is a festival over the first two weeks in February in honor of the Virgin Maria of the Candelaria. It is Peru’s most important religious celebration and one of the largest in South America (just behind the Rio’s Carnaval), which means lots of beer and lots of Catholicism.

With neighborhood and village dance groups (conjuntos) winding through the streets of Puno for hours on end fueled by local pride and alcohol, keeping your camera handy is advisable. The first weekend´s competition is reserved for the traditional dances of the native communities (danzas autóctonas), while the following week is reserved for the more stylized dance groups (trajes de luces, literally suits of light).

1. In this traditional dance, called the cajelo, the ladies swing back and forth displaying their dresses and the men alternate in whipping the ground, meant to symbolize preparing the land for planting. It shows the love/hate relationship with the land (pachamama, also meaning “time” and “the universe), as it provides nourishment as well as stress if the crops are ailing. Of course, the next person I asked said it was a satirical re-enactment of the whip-wielding Spanish landlords after their conquest of the area.

2. In this Aymara group recently exiting the stadium competition to tour through the streets, it´s pretty obvious how much work goes into the costumes. Many individuals will spend a month´s salary or more on a get-up, and their skills on the zampoña (Pan pipes) and bombos (drums) are there to match it.

K.E.L.P. stands for Kultura En La Pared (Kulture On The Wall). This Chilean Graffiti artist shares his process in pictures.

I started graffiti writing in 1997 in Santiago de Chile.

K.E.L.P. stands for Kultura En La Pared (Kulture On The Wall). It’s my pseudonym. I’ve loved colors from an early age, and especially the political murals that started to pop up in Chile in the ’80s and ‘90s . They impressed me with thier vivid, saturated colors, and occupied vast surfaces.

Graffiti started for me by by watching first. I’d observe graffiti writers paint and my love for the art grew fast in Plaza Italia, Santiago’s downtown area, where the one and only graffiti shop was (Otra Vida).

I followed the wave of graffiti out of Santiago and into other cities within Chile and then outside of South America, and I painted with friends and slowly came to know many great people who were also creating and developing the art. This pushed me and I grew and learned within the medium that has become my life’s passion.

Right now I am living in Europe, immersing myself in new experiences, learning and observing. I sustain myself by painting and creating and selling my work to companies. My love for the art has enabled me to be independent and travel the world.

The legend goes that every time a girl would get lost in the woods, Trauco would get her pregnant. The story varies because it is a myth, but everytime a girls gets pregnant in an unexpectedly we say the Trauco was there.

While the art scene worldwide is getting more elitist as time goes on, this is art by and for the people of Buenos Aires.

Spend even five minutes in Buenos Aires and you’re sure to see graffiti cluttering nearly every visible wall.

Most of the time it couldn’t be said to be an improvement on the architecture many take for granted. Spend a few days here and it’s part of the scenery. Proclamations of love for another person, a football team or a band are the bulk of it while political statements from radical to those that are sponsored by political parties take a close second.

But within your first week, you’re sure to run across a wall that makes it obvious that not all graffiti are pleas to be heard or the human equivalent of a dog pissing on a fire hydrant. You’re sure to see a single provocative stencil here or there. Within a month you’ll find that there are some places where you can see several different styles co-mingling to produce something that makes passers-by stop and consider the message, smile, admire, crane their necks and squint their eyes. While the art scene worldwide is getting more elite as time goes on, this is art by and for the people of Buenos Aires.

It’s only fitting, then, that GraffitiMundo, a company that gives graffiti tours in English, sheds light on the artists and their processes in an accessible way. Marina Charles, who leads the tours, doesn’t get bogged down with curatorial jargon that means nothing to the average viewer. She takes visitors through the history of the graffiti renaissance after the dictatorship, pointing out key art and artists off the beaten path from Chacarita to Villa Crespo and ending in Palermo.

Find yourself in Buenos Aires and advance reservations and $75 pesos (less than $20 US) will get even jaded art veterans excited about art again.

Photo (and feature photo) of a Kansas City wall by aeionic who says: Graffiti artwork, like most street art is often illegal and therefore the better works are often executed off the beaten track where they can be created with less time contraints and less risk of arrest. The artists are also reclusive and worried about prosecution, so a little footwork is often necessary to locate the better works.

This female artist, Femme9, often creates faces and collaborates with others such as Motor in this photo. One enjoyable aspect of street art is the sheer exuberance of discovering young counterculture artists. Combined with an enduro motorcycle and a digital camera, one can cover a lot of alleyways, abandonments, and railroad tracks. Ahhhh, freedom!

Just blocks from where the Conquistador Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada decided to rest and let his horses drink from the brook in 1538, one can find some real gems that go a long way in illustrating attitudes of students and graffiti artists in these politically charged times.

The streets of the colonial Candelaria area of the Colombian capital are chaotic, narrow, and the walls blank canvases for disgruntled students and agitators.

At first glance, dodging the ubiquitous mountains of dog shit, shattered glass and gamines (street people), this part of town feels decidedly unsafe and edgy and after a certain hour this is certainly the case.

But, taking a midday stroll while the students from 5 universities are on their lunch hour renders the Candelaria harmless and one can inspect with further intensity the high quality of political graffiti that adorns the walls of the birthplace of contemporary Colombia.

Just blocks from where the Conquistador Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada decided to rest and let his horses drink from the brook in 1538, one can find some real gems that go a long way in illustrating attitudes of students and graffiti artists in these politically charged times.

This series of photographs show the point of view and graphic prowess of one of these artists. With elections set for 2010, there will surely be more.
The Sirocco sits out like a bird nest 64 floors above the hectic streets of Bangkok. You can pick your poison from among their specialty bars while enjoying the best view in the city.

The Sirocco sits out like a bird nest 64 floors above the hectic streets of Bangkok. After spending an evening there I have no doubt it’s one of top 10 rooftop bars in the world.

LEBUA SEEMS almost like a Steve Wynn casino. They’ve got a bunch of different little restaurants and bars. Each has its own specialty: sushi, oysters, fancy whiskey, cigars or martinis, but all of them share the best view in BKK.

Bangkok is full of some pretty amazing luxury hotels, but for drinking and dining in the cat-bird seat, Lebua’s my number one draft pick.

Sitting atop Bangkok’s second tallest skyscraper, the Sky Bar at Sirocco is the best place in the city for an amazing view and a stiff drink.

The designers were big on light effects when they designed Lebua. The Sky Bar lights up and changes colors constantly. A few floors below at Breeze, Lebua’s seafood restaurant, there’s a glass walkway full of LED lights that takes some courage to walk across.

Looking down on the restaurant, Sirocco features a live jazz band from the US, playing hits from greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone.

A couple floors above the tables at Sirocco sits another bar called Distil. They have an oyster bar, amazing sushi and a kick ass female DJ spinning fun house records.

Sirocco’s a sexy spot for a date because of low tables tucked into corners right at the edge of the glass balcony.

Leaning up against the glass and starring down to the streets below can induce vertigo. Nothing a martini won’t cure!

Disclaimer: Lebua sponsored our trip to come check out their hotels, though our opinions and experiences were all of our own design.

Royal de Luxe’s famous marionettes celebrate the Fall of the The Wall by turning Berlin into their playground.

The massive and astounding marionettes came to Berlin in a program called “The Berlin Reunion”, a series of eight walks set to commemorate German Reunification.

Hauled by cranes and scores of puppeteers, the giants moved about town over four days from October 1-4, following a tale set in motion by Royal de Luxe. The story told over the course of these walks was of two giants being separated by a city torn in two by monsters, eventually reuniting despite epic odds.

1. Once upon a time, a long time ago, Berlin was a swamp inhabited by giants. They planted roots in the water which slowly grew up into trees, whose trunks they later used to build shelters.

2. In one of these huts lived a Little Giantess together with her uncle, Big Giant. He had given her a wonderful boat in which she could travel across the continent. But one day land and sea monsters tore the city in two: And one of the two pieces was walled up.
